Nutrition, Food Security and Livelihood Resilience
Nutrition
We can not solve poverty without solving malnutrition, Improving nutrition is one of the most effective forms of aid development
- We help to improve the nutritional situation to combat growth retardation and anaemia. Better nutrition leads to better health especially increasing the chance of escaping the poverty trap.
- Improving the nutritional situation with local products Our health professionals base their recommendations on field research into locally available products. The aim is to find sustainable solutions through the use of tailor-made plans aimed at creating healthy habits.
- Green, because plant-based food is not only healthier but also more sustainable. A predominantly plant-based diet is good for health, and the environment and the better choice in dry areas.
- Good nutrition helps children to learn better at school. Good nutrition gives children the opportunity to survive, grow, develop, learn, play, participate and contribute. Malnutrition, on the other hand, deprives children of their future prospects and condemns young people to a life of insecurity.
Food Security;
The food situation in South Sudan is more precarious than it has ever been since the country gained its independence in 2011. Two out of three people regularly have too little to eat.
More than 80% of the country’s population works in agriculture in order to feed themselves.
However, ongoing conflicts and crises, combined with the effects of climate change, have destroyed their livelihoods. Despite a massive Humanitarian Aid, households cannot improve their food situation and protect themselves against crises.
Chard Measures On Food Security:
Creating Large Vegetable Gardens: The professionals of CHARD had observed that the people of South Sudan needed to consume more green leafy vegetables. Large vegetable gardens are now being established there. The green leafy vegetables can be harvested, dried and ground into a powder that can be sprinkled over food during periods of drought. During this process, a few of the beneficial nutrients are lost.
Expanding Agricultural Production: The project trains smallholder farmers to improve cultivation methods, provides seeds and production inputs, and advises agricultural cooperatives.
Managing Natural Resources and Disaster Risks: To build a foundation for agricultural production in the long term, the projects support municipalities in preparing risk analyses and management plans. Local communities implement joint measures, such as erosion control and constructing dams and reservoirs.
Promotion of Healthy Nutrition: The project educates smallholder households on various healthy nutrition. It also provides information about how to improve hygiene and care practices for babies and infants and how to plan their budget to maximise nutrition
Improving Food Security
Climate change reduces the fertility of the soil, which reduces agricultural yields. In training courses, people learn how to deal with this better. The yields of the most small farmers in South Sudan are low. Changing climatic conditions have reduced the fertility of the soil, and much knowledge about agriculture has been lost due to the ongoing conflicts in the country.
CHARD is addressing the resulting food insecurity with short- and long-term approaches, which include:-
- Distributing seeds, tools and agricultural equipment.
- Agricultural training for farmers who then share their newfound knowledge with their communities.
- Involving young people in testing new cultivation methods in fields schools or vegetable gardens for women
Livelihood And Resilience:
CHARD supports the communities and their members with various activities so that they can increase their productivity and self-reliance in the long term.
Strengthening in the Resilience of Women
Half of the community members receiving vocational training under the project are women, girls and youths. Providing them with the opportunity to engage in gainful employment is intended to increase their resilience in times of crisis. We also distribute menstrual hygiene items enabling girls and women to actively participate in daily life.
The project is more on strengthening food security, resilience and peaceful coexistence through livelihood opportunities for women and youth groups in South Sudan.
